Key stage 4 pupils will focus on refining their emotional intelligence leading to a AQA unit award.
Intent
Our aim is to meet the needs of young people preparing them for adulthood while promoting care and respect though positive relationships.
We have developed a tutor curriculum that covers 4 key skills which all link to a student’s THRIVE profile:
Emotional resilience
Social
Communication
Preparation for adulthood
Through our extended tutoring sessions, we aim to ensure that learning is bespoke to the personalised needs of our learners and demonstrates a strong understanding of each student's needs. Helping students to find the tools needed to succeed is a key part of independence and we through our tutor time we will be encouraging concentration, perseverance, imagination, cooperation, the enjoyment of learning, self-improvement and curiosity.
Implementation
Students will work with their tutor to create their own toolbox that gives them a sense of control in the situation enabling them to ‘self-sooth’. We will support students in their capacity to remove their mind from what was causing them stress so they can approach the situation with balanced reason.
Tutors will do this through:
The use of regular meet and greets, check in/check out.
Offering secure time to talk for pupils to explore feelings.
Building safe relationships with vulnerable pupils.
Providing talking tools such as feeling/sensory boxes within the classroom, to help pupils self-regulate.
Ensuring that the voice of the pupil is heard and acted upon.
Enrichment and cross-curricular links:
Everything we do is supported by the THRIVE Approach and will address the students own THRIVE targets.
Students will also have a tutor target for every lesson.
Impact
It is hoped that each student will develop the tools they need to tackle a wide range of situations promoting ownership of their own learning. Students’ confidence will develop through the creation of a safe environment that allows them to reach their full potential and be able to effectively engage in school life and their future aspirations.
